The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) has officially announced significant updates to the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification process, set to take effect on January 1, 2026. These changes aim to ensure the RBT credential continues aligning closely with evolving professional standards and current practices in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming changes, especially highlighting the differences between the current Task List (2nd edition) and the new Task List (3rd edition).

Key Differences Between RBT Task List 2.0 and the New Task List 3.0

The new Task List 3.0, which goes live in 2026, includes significant adjustments and additions, detailed as follows:

1. Clearer Domains and Revised Language

The six existing content domains remain, but four have updated titles for enhanced clarity:

  • MeasurementData Collection and Graphing
  • AssessmentBehavior Assessment
  • Skill AcquisitionBehavior Acquisition
  • Professional Conduct and Scope of PracticeEthics

Tasks across these domains now incorporate more direct, actionable language.

2. Increased Total Number of Tasks

The total number of tasks increased from 37 to 43:

  • 4 tasks removed due to redundancy or overlap.
  • 4 tasks revised to expand on current responsibilities.
  • 2 tasks split into 4 tasks, allowing for greater specificity.

3. Exciting New Tasks Added

Eight entirely new tasks were included to better reflect contemporary RBT responsibilities:

  • Data Calculation & Summarization (rate, mean duration, percentage)
  • Identifying Trends in Graphed Data
  • Risks with Unreliable Data & Poor Fidelity
  • Implementing Positive/Negative Punishment Procedures (e.g., time-out)
  • Secondary Effects of Extinction & Punishment
  • Core Ethical Principles for RBTs
  • Gift-Giving & Receiving Guidelines
  • Cultural Humility and Responsiveness in Service

These new tasks aim to deepen RBTs’ applied knowledge and enhance ethical and cultural competence in practice.

Adjustments in Test Content Outline & Domain Weighting

The new examination blueprint includes subtle but important shifts in content weighting to better match current practice demands. Here’s a quick overview of these adjustments:

Why is the BACB Updating the RBT Certification?

The BACB routinely reviews certification criteria—including eligibility, exams, and maintenance requirements—to keep pace with professional and clinical advancements. Since the last comprehensive review of the RBT certification occurred back in 2017, it was critical to reassess requirements and ensure they remain relevant.

Throughout 2022 and 2023, committees of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), consisting of RBTs, BCBAs, and BCBA-Ds from diverse roles, geographic locations, and practice settings, rigorously analyzed current RBT standards to make informed recommendations for the future.

Job Task Analysis (JTA): Understanding the Review Process

The backbone of BACB’s examination development, the Job Task Analysis (JTA), involved meticulous processes facilitated by psychometricians from Pearson VUE. SMEs collaboratively developed and validated a new Test Content Outline (TCO), carefully considering the tasks crucial for competent RBT practice. This rigorous validation included input from over 9,700 practicing RBTs and supervisors who confirmed the relevance and frequency of proposed tasks.

Updated Eligibility and Maintenance Requirements for RBTs

Improved Training and Competency Requirements

The BACB now mandates a detailed structured training curriculum covering 54 topics across 8 distinct areas, including Applied Behavior Analysis, Ethics, and Behavior Change Interventions. The standard 40-hour training now has specific minimum hour requirements per content area, ensuring consistency in the training experience.

Trainer qualifications have also been upgraded:

  • Responsible Trainers must complete an additional supervision training module.
  • Assistant Trainers must now hold an active RBT certification or higher.

Biennial Recertification & Professional Development Emphasis

A significant change to the renewal process includes a shift from annual renewal to a two-year recertification cycle, aligning with other BACB certifications. The annual Renewal Competency Assessment will be eliminated, replaced by a requirement to complete 12 hours of professional development every two years. Approved professional development activities include:

  • In-service training by a certified supervisor.
  • Continuing education from Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) Providers.
  • University courses in behavior analysis.

This shift encourages continuous learning and skill development, preparing RBTs to better meet ongoing professional demands.

New RBT Certification Fee Structure

Considering the shift to a two-year cycle, certification and recertification fees have been adjusted slightly, while remaining budget-neutral:

  • Initial Certification Application: Increased to $65 (plus exam fee to Pearson VUE).
  • Biennial Recertification Fee: $50 every two years, simplifying administrative processes and reducing overall costs for organizations and practitioners.

These substantial updates by the BACB represent a meaningful evolution of the RBT certification program. These changes ensure Registered Behavior Technicians continue to deliver top-quality ABA services and maintain professional excellence amidst ongoing changes in the behavior analytic field.
