How to Become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT): 2026 3rd Edition Guide
Registered Behavior Technicians implement treatment plans designed by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) and Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBA). RBTs play a crucial role in the remediation of deficits associated with autism. RBT work is extremely gratifying, and a job that anyone would be proud to hold. But how do you become an RBT?
Becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT®) is the most popular entry point into the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). RBTs work directly with individuals—often children with autism—to implement life-changing behavior intervention plans.
As of January 1, 2026, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) has transitioned to the 3rd Edition RBT Test Content Outline (TCO). This updated guide walks you through the new requirements, from the expanded task list to the new biennial recertification process.
Step 1: Meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements
Before starting your training, you must meet these three foundational criteria:
-
Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
-
Education: You must hold a minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent.
-
Background Check: You must pass a criminal background check and abuse registry check within 180 days of your application.
Step 2: Complete the New 3rd Edition 40-Hour RBT Training
Your 40-hour training must now align with the 3rd Edition RBT Task List. If you use a certificate from an old 2nd Edition course, your application will be rejected.
Key Changes in the 3rd Edition Curriculum:
-
Expanded Focus: The curriculum now includes 43 tasks (up from 37).
-
New Mandatory Topics: Training must now cover specific areas like Cultural Humility, Ethics Principles, and Data Summarization (calculating rate, mean, and percentage).
-
Timing: The 40 hours must be completed in no less than 5 days and no more than 180 days.
Step 3: Pass the Updated RBT Initial Competency Assessment
After your training, a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) must assess your hands-on skills. The 3rd Edition assessment includes minor but critical updates:
-
Measurement Changes: The “interview” option for measurement tasks has been removed; you must now demonstrate these skills live or via role-play.
-
New Tasks: You may be assessed on the new 3rd Edition tasks, such as identifying trends in graphed data or describing the secondary effects of extinction.
-
Assessor Requirements: If an assistant helps with your assessment, they must now hold an active RBT certification or higher.
Step 4: Submit Your Application to the BACB
Once you have your 40-hour certificate and your signed Competency Assessment, you will create an account on the BACB website and submit your application.
-
Application Fee: $65 (paid to the BACB).
-
Exam Fee: $45 (paid to Pearson VUE).
Step 5: Pass the 3rd Edition RBT Exam
The RBT exam still consists of 85 multiple-choice questions (75 scored, 10 pilot), but the weighting has shifted under the 3rd Edition:
A. Data Collection and Graphing17%
B. Behavior Assessment11%
C. Behavior Acquisition25%
D. Behavior Reduction19%
E. Documentation and Reporting13%
F. Ethics15%
